  • Wetland Types: Piedmont Seepage Forest and Bottomland Hardwood Forest

  • Unique Feature: The preserve supports a disappearing piedmont wetland type and federally endangered herb.

Brogden Bottomlands  

  • Location:  Johnston County, NC 
  • Wetland Type: Cypress Gum Swamp and Bottomland Hardwood Forest/Slough 
  • Site Owner: Triangle Land Conservancy
  • Unique Feature: Large, intact floodplain area along the Neuse River just east of Raleigh with a variety of habitats.

Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge   

  • Location:  Hyde and Washington Counties, NC 
  • Wetland Types: Pocosin, Bay Forest, Mixed Pine Flatwoods, Hardwood Swamps 
  • Site Owner: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
  • Unique Feature: Distinct peat dominated wetlands and substantial birding opportunities.

The Pocosin National Wildlife Refuge supports 200 bird species, 40 mammal species, 40 reptile species and 36 amphibian species.
